2015 AGM & Awards

Bannerdown held it’s annual club AGM last weekend at the Steeple Ashton village hall. As last year’s event, a two course dinner was served by staff from the village pub, The Longs Arms.

After the food, it was time for the formalities of the AGM, the raffle draw and the annual awards presentations.

AGM2015

This years awards were:

Bannerdown Bowl, awarded for overall merit – Simon Foster
Bannerdown Cup, awarded for most progress – Sam Arnold
John Burn Trophy, awarded to the club’s unsung hero – Bob Bromwich
Keevil Trophy, awarded this year for the best flight – Neil Geraghty
Colerne Cup, competition success – Andy Smith
Derek Findlay Trophy, longest flight – Callum Harkness
Keith MacPhee Bursary – Charlotte Acton
CFI Trophy – Oscar Constable
Hog of the Year – Jon Arnold
Best Instructor (as voted for by students) – Bob Brain

It was also noted that Andy Miller had been awarded the Bill Scull Safety Award by the BGA.

We were then given an insight into what it’s like to compete in an international gliding competition by brothers Steve and Howard Jones. The pair took the gold medal in the newly inaugurated 20m multi-seat class, having dominated the event from start to finish. They covered everything from the pro’s and cons of borrowing an aircraft to the separating of workload in the cockpit, to dealing with winning most of the competition days.

As well as thanking our speakers Steve and Howard, we must also thank Jo for organising another successful AGM event.

Congratulations to all – well deserved!

… because sometimes you need a neighbour to help you!

Whilst we always try and land back at our home airfield, Keevil, there will always be occasions where we stray too far and just can’t find the lift to get us back. It’s not a problem, a glider can easily land in a farmers field. It’s something glider pilots train for before venturing away from their home airfield, and at Bannerdown we are checked annually using the club motor glider.

Tractor and Glider Trailer

Gliders are designed to be de-rigged and loaded into a trailer easily. However that nice landing field is not always close to the road, and sometimes a little help is required to get the trailer in and out.

Its always nice to be able to help a neighbour…..

The weekend we were joined by a K13 and members from Shalbourne Gliding Club who fly from Rivar Hill. Rivar Hill is a regular turning point for us and often the destination early cross country pilots use as a destination for their Silver Distance attempts.

K13 from Shalbourne

With their winches in winter maintenance and requiring more attention than first thought, they have no way to launch – so they are visiting us. Making use of the chance to aerotow as well!
